The High Atlas Mountains and Tizi n’Tichka Pass
Your adventure begins with an early morning departure from Marrakech. As you head south, you’ll traverse the breathtaking High Atlas Mountains, ascending through the scenic Tizi n’Tichka Pass. At an altitude of 2,260 meters, this pass offers panoramic views of rugged peaks, lush valleys, and traditional Berber villages perched on hillsides.
Ait Benhaddou: A Step Back in Time
Our first major stop is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Benhaddou, an ancient fortified village. This iconic ksar (fortified village) is famous for its well-preserved earthen architecture and has been a filming location for movies like Gladiator and The Mummy. Explore the winding alleys and climb to the top for sweeping views of the surrounding desert landscape.
Ouarzazate: The Gateway to the Desert
Next, we stop in Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Morocco” for its prominent film studios and historic kasbahs. You’ll have time to visit the impressive Taourirt Kasbah, a marvel of traditional Moroccan design, before continuing your journey.
Arrival at Dades Valley
In the late afternoon, we arrive at the picturesque Dades Valley, often called the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs.” The dramatic landscape of red cliffs and scattered kasbahs is truly a sight to behold. Enjoy a relaxing evening at a charming local riad or hotel, where a traditional Moroccan dinner will be served.
